Family Time

Not only did we enjoy celebrating my mom's 90th birthday, but we also took time to check out the sites along the way.

Driving into the small town of Waitsburg, WA, I just had to stop and snap a few of 'Izzy' the camel.  I joined some other travelers to pet her and watch her eat some apple.  The guys opted to stay in the car.

As the weather was sunny and warm, and we arrived a little ahead of schedule, I took a side trip to show Larry and Jacob the 'Spiral Highway' that Liz and I discovered last Summer.  We wound our way to the top enjoying the view of the Snake and Clearwater Rivers.  Then we wound our way back down again moving on down the Clearwater to Kamiah.

I took time to snap a few on my morning walk to the hotel where L & J were staying.  Then we drove back to Mom's and prepared to take her for a drive.  First, though, she treated us to lunch at the local Hearthstone Restaurant... not one we would recommend.  The guys had burgers - hard to mess those up, but Mom and I were still hungry when we left.

We then headed up into the hills south of Kamiah to the town of Grangeville where we hoped to get a latte after enjoying the scenery.  Well, we enjoyed the scenery as we wound our way through a nice, long construction zone. We had a nice chat with the first flagger, snapped a few and moved on to the next flagger.  He wasn't as friendly.  The last stop was an actual stoplight in the middle of nowhere.  After that, it was smooth sailing up onto the high prairie where the view was spectacular - I planned to stop on the way back to capture some of that... oh, well.  We ended up going a much different route at Mom's suggestion... you can read about that in my 'A Milestone' post, if you're interested.

Then home again!  We enjoyed stopping to capture some color and history that caught my attention, driving into the sunset and finally arriving home just before midnight where Sunny D greeted us, happily purring his way around us all.  Here's a link to the photo album if the slideshow isn't working right.

Some random thoughts to finish this off:

Miles traveled: 1200

Road construction sites: 8

Number of wiener dogs we saw in Idaho: 6 - we decided it must be the Idaho state dog.

Audiobooks are awesome - we enjoyed filling the miles with Bill O'Reilly's autobiography - highly entertaining!

I now know where there is a Dairy Queen in Richland.

The #1 rated Taco Time in the country is in Lewiston, ID - I'm not so sure it's #1 anymore...

Teenage boys should not ride their scooters into the road at night wearing dark clothing.

Always keep an eye out for deer - I'm glad I saw the doe crossing right in front of me!

Texting is a great way to communicate about surprises!

Even if a hotel doesn't advertise wifi, they may have it!

You never know when you'll see a camel in a field!

How can cows manage on those steep hillsides?

I wonder how many old, dilapidated barns and pioneer houses we passed?

There are a lot more windmills up along the way than last time - I'll bet we saw hundreds of them!

I did not find any Dairy Queen or Baskin Robbins in Walla Walla.

Times getting lost or taking a wrong turn - 4

I like Mom's pastor - he's a sharp one!  We see eye to eye on Mom's much debated 'eternal salvation' view ( Mom said she'd never win).

Mom had a frappucino, not a crappucino.

Mom needs to share her cookies with Paula (the pastor's wife).
