Social Utilities - What d'ya think?

I've been hanging out on MySpace and Facebook now for quite some time. So, what value do I see in these social utilities sites? I've heard a variety of opinions as to how bad or good they are, so what do I think?

For me, these sites have given me a place where I can reconnect with old friends from way back when, talk with family, and keep up with current relationships in all the spheres of my life now - letterboxing, Star Wars costuming, and my synagogue community.

I've been amazed, as I think about it, how much more I've gotten to know people, even those I see every week. There's a connection there that just didn't exist before. I've also been revisiting my past when I come across someone I haven't seen for 30 years - that's been an interesting pastime. Pretty amazing for all the bad press such sites often get, huh?

Sure, you can get into things that are better to steer clear of, but that is true no matter where you go. Wisdom is necessary no matter what. So, I find these sites to be good for me.

I agree with you. My brother is in CA, my sister is about 440 miles away, my favorite cousin is in TN and I'm in FL. and the rest of my family is in WI. These sites(mostly FB) has alowed us to communicate in a way that is convenient for each of, in a way that is deeper than just e-mail.
Just stay away from the games ;)

agreed, agreed, my friend :-)

I'm much more into the inter-personal relationships that those social utilities offer than the games such as Farmville, etc. But, to each his (or her) own - I know a lot of folks like those.

In my view, it just gives me one more avenue to get to know those in my life, either physically or virtually. :-)

I am 50/50 on it. I love catching up with former high school and college friends. I don't love that my family would rather post on FB than pick up the phone. I love seeing pictures of what everyone is doing. I don't love the oversharing of information that is way too personal.

I am currently in a bit of a quandry. I only have two co-workers on my FB page (two women I have known for 10+ years) and I never discuss work anywhere (except the one time, posting Panama pictures.) I keep those two aspects of my life separate and cringe when I see people posting about how they hate their job. I wonder how they can do this and not expect it to come back and bite them. I have a co-worker in another state who asked if I had a FB page becaue he could not find me. I'm pretty much hidden; only searchable by friends of friends. Every day for TWO weeks, I've been asked to find him and friend him. I don't want more co-workers on my page. I will end up hurting his feelings by telling him no. UGH.
